Recently, our school has been infected with hundreds of new devices, one for every student. This device is a Dell Venue 11, which is a tablet that can be set into a keyboard as well. (Click here to see a review of this device.) Since I am writing this very post on my new laptop/tablet, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on how this will affect the learning of OHS students. Will it help or hinder the learning?
Everyone knows that all people learn in different ways. Some people are auditory learners while others are visual. Some students learn best reading out of a book and some by hands-on work. Similarly, some students learn best by taking notes with pen and paper whereas others prefer using a computer. Personally, I retain the material best when writing out the notes simply because the muscle movement helps me make a connection to what I'm actually writing rather than just copying the notes down. For some students, however, they can use the computer with no problem. Although I usually can get the most out of what I am learning when physically writing, I am okay with either way. What about you? How do you learn best?
In terms of paying attention in class, I haven’t had too much of a problem ignoring my device while the teacher is lecturing, given that I’ve only had it for two days. However, for some students this may prove to be an issue. My advice is to keep the device in its bag at all times unless the teacher asks you to have it out. This way, you are not tempted by it.
Overall, I believe that there will definitely be some major bugs to work out of the system. However, in the long run, once all of the kinks are taken care of, I believe that the device will be a useful tool in learning for all of OHS.
