In my American Literature class, we are assigned to make blog posts as well as comment on other blogs. After posting a few times on my own blog and commenting on others, I have grown to much prefer blogging to the academic essay. The main reason that I enjoy blogging more is because I have much more liberty in my word choice, structure and style of writing.
On the other hand, I often feel restricted and limited in what I am permitted to write in academic essays. There is a certain way that all academic essays are meant to be constructed. As someone who greatly enjoys writing creatively, I find such a strict structure difficult to conform to.
I do believe that academic papers can be important in many situations and in many careers. However, I believe that blogging has more of an impact. First of all, it is more reader friendly because the diction is usually easy to understand and the piece is structured in a more easy-going manner. Secondly, I find that it appeals to a wider range of audiences. Even students who do not necessarily enjoy school can find blogs that they would enjoy reading. Another reason is because I believe that blogging has many more options to write about. A blog can be about video games, animals, scientific theories and loads more. Essays usually must be strictly informational or persuasive whereas blogs can be whatever we want them to be.
So here’s my question to you. Which do you prefer, blogging or writing essays? Why?
